Focus on Preventing Leaks and Taking Care of Your Plumbing This Year

As a homeowner in Fort Lauderdale, FL, you are already well aware of the rising costs of homeownership. The good news is that there is a lot that you can do to keep those bills down, simply by being vigilant and doing some preventative maintenance.

When it comes to your plumbing, it takes very little time to have a major impact on keeping your system working well and preventing leaks. Do yourself a favor this year and prevent water leaks.

Find Leaks First

identify-a-leakDon’t wait until plumbing leaks grow into major problems. Get in the habit of finding them first by inspecting your plumbing on a regular basis.

Follow a planned routine, starting in the basement and work your way upstairs. Don’t forget to check outside as well as at the plumbing underneath sinks inside cabinetry.

Some obvious signs of leaks are pooling water, mold growth and moisture on pipes. Some less obvious signs are rising water bills and low water pressure.

Stop Corrosion in its Tracks

pipe-corrosionCorrosion will happen naturally over time, but don’t speed up the process by neglecting your pipes. Unfortunately, that is one thing that will cause your pipes to decay and break easily.

If you’ve got copper pipes, consider upgrading them to PVC for extra protection. Run water often to avoid collecting standing water.

Install an at-source water purification system to clean the water from excess minerals that will amplify corrosion.

Clog Prevention

If you do get clogs, don’t reach for the commercial clog removal. Those toxins will bind to your pipes and cause leaks. Instead, use a plumbing snake.

As a preventative step, it is also a good idea to have your drains cleaned every year or two by a professional to keep clogs away.

Water Pressure

low-water-pressureBelieve it or not, the speed and strength of your water traveling through the pipes could actually cause damage. Check that your water pressure isn’t too high.

If it is, then adjust it as you need, down to between 40-45 psi- but no higher than about 60 psi. Don’t put off small plumbing leaks or other problems thinking that it is a hassle to take care of them.

You are saving yourself time, money and inconvenience by taking care of things today.
