When Should you Replace Equipment Over Repairing It

It is a well-known fact that maintenance and regular repairs can save you money in the long run when it comes to your home’s components. However, there is a fine line where it is actually more cost effective to repipe your plumbing, replace an appliance, or even a fixture because the likelihood of actually being able to fix it for any reasonable amount of time is unlikely.

The question is, how do you know the difference? Here are some signs to watch for.

Kitchen Sink: Replace or Repair?

kitchen-sinkIs your sink cracked, rusted or otherwise discolored? You should replace it. If the faucet is leaky, you may be able to fix it, but if it is chronic, it could be a sign of a bigger problem, and you’ll probably need to replace it.

Of bigger concern is if the plumbing underneath the sink appears to be corroded. If that is the case, especially on the joints, you’ll be looking at some major leaks and water damage.

Your plumbing pipes doe eventually need to be replaced because as they age, they decay. Corrosion speeds up the process.

Should you get Your Washing Machine Replaced?

washing-machineHow do you know if you need a new washing machine? If you are thinking of repair, consider how much it is going to cost.

If the estimate is for 50 percent or more of how much you paid for it, or if your washer is more than about eight years old, you are wise to just get a new one.

Other trouble signs include shaking during use, lots of leaking water, foul odors and loud, banging noises.

Is it Possible to Repair the Shower?

This is an opportune time to replace it with an eco-friendly low flow shower head. As for the shower itself, how are the drains?

If they are chronically plugged, and you’ve done professional drain cleaning maintenance, investigate the plumbing below your sink.

It may, in fact, need to be replaced because of age.

Is my Water Heater in Need of Replacement?

water-heaterThe first thing you should consider is the age of your water heater. Do you have a tankless heater? If it is approaching 20 years, you should replace it.

Storage tank heaters have an even shorter lifespan, so if it is in the 10-15-year-old range, it isn’t worth it to get it repaired.
