Top 3 Water-Wasting Appliances in Your Home and What You Can Do To Reduce Your Water Use

Water is a valuable commodity that some people think there is an endless supply of to go around. The truth is that we need to conserve and use only the water we need and not waste it. Here is the three top home appliances that can waste water and how to do a better job in conserving it:

Your Toilets Can Be Extremely Wasteful

Toilets can use up as much as 10,000 gallons a year, especially if they leak. It is likely the worst offender in the home for wasting water and can cause a waste of 20 to 30 gallons a day. So, if you notice you toilet running all the time, then be sure to check the flapper valves, and replace the mechanism in the back of the bowl.

To check for a leak you can drip a few drops of food coloring in the tank and see if it gets to the bowl, if so, there is a leak somewhere. Plus, if you have an older toilet, be sure to upgrade to one of the newer, low flow toilets that conserve water, they only use 1.5 gallon and the old ones use 7 gallons per flush.

Your Washing Machine Could Be More Efficient

The next worst water waster in the home is the washing machine. The biggest way to save water here is to only do full laundry loads. Don’t wash one or two items. It can waste as much as 1,000 gallons of water a month if you do tiny loads all the time. So, be sure to only use as much water as needed and that the load is full.

You can also invest in a newer, more efficient washer that is made to save water. The newer models use about 25 percent less water per load.

Dishwashers Can Waste Plenty of Water as Well

Just like with the washing machine, if you run a load of dishes that includes only a few cups and spoons, then it is a big water waster. Don’t run the dishwasher unless it is totally full! Plus, don’t rinse the dishes off prior to putting them into the dishwasher, as the dishwashers made today don’t need to have this done in order for the load to get clean.

That along can save up to 20 gallons of water for each load of dishes! And just like with the washing machine, be sure to buy a model made to save water as these can save up to 25 percent of the amount of water per dishwasher load.
